One of our favorite holiday gifts for knitters, especially for holiday stockings are sock knitting gifts. Sock knitting needles and sock yarn are just small enough to stuff into a holiday stocking and it's always fun to see whether the knitter gets the humor in such a gift, stuff to make socks packaged in a sock itself! Knitters love that kind of humor. You can't just buy any yarn or needles for socks. Sure, you could knit a pair of socks out of the same yarn you use for sweaters, but those are going to be some very thick socks! Yes sock yarn is different than other yarns. It is thin and designed for durability since of course it's meant to go on your hardworking feet. Sock yarn usually comes in a merino/nylon combination. The merino for softness and the nylon for extra strength. This makes sock yarn excellent for other heavy duty garments like snow hats and gloves. Oftentimes, the merino is superwash treated to avoid shrinking, so you know these hats gloves and socks will carry you through a rough winter. Check out some of our favorite sock yarns:
It can be tough picking out sock knitting needles as a gift because every knitter knits at a different gauge and has a particular size knitting needle that they prefer to knit socks. We recommend buying a set of double pointed knitting needles because a knitter will find a use for all of them. The 1 and 2 sizes are typical sock sizes. The 3 and 4 sizes can work for hats and 5's work for heavier gauge sock yarns. Many different manufacturers offer double pointed knitting needle sets. Check the type of needles that your knitter prefers. Keep a keen eye the next time you see him or her knitting. Are they knitting with metal, wood or bamboo? When in doubt, metal double pointed needles are better because over time metal needles rarely snap, while most wooden and bamboo double pointed needles will weaken from use. That said, wood and bamboo needle producers often will replace broken needles, but then you're still waiting many days before you receive that needle replacement. However, the softness of wood and bamboo can be easier on the wrists than the rigidity of metal.

The cool thing about sock yarn and sock needles is that you don't always have to knit socks with them. You can knit hats and scarves and cowls and fortunately there are quite a few books dedicated to projects to make out of sock yarn, mainly because nearly every kniter has a substantial stash of sock yarn. When you find another knitter in the world suddenly small talk is not nearly so painful.
